THE Guyana Mixed Martial Arts Federation (GYMMAF) received a $2M boost from Beharry Restaurant Holdings behind their KFC brand ahead of their participation at this year’s Pan American Championships, set for June 22-24 in Monterrey, Mexico.

Pamela Manasseh, Marketing Manager at Beharry Restaurant Holdings, pointed to her company’s support of the country’s national teams and athletes from various disciplines, adding they’re happy to once again support the GYMMAF.

Gavin Singh, president of the GYMMAF, reflected on KFC’s support for their National team to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). She thanked the Board of Directors, General Manager Maria Yellery-Hoosein, and Manasseh for their efforts invested in MMA locally.

“It will take commitment from companies such as Beharry Restaurant Holdings, who understand that success for their companies is not only measured in sales but also in contributing to sports development, academic development and cultural growth in this great land of ours. That will make the impossible a tangible reality,” Singh said.

Looking at the team’s composition, Singh revealed that “some clubs have opted to exhibit their athletes for selection while some were reluctant due to unpreparedness. Most coaches and local executives have accepted the need for championship camps for their teams, henceforth, allowing the experienced candidates to be the first choice since Guyana will be on show.

The preparation of athletes is a process that entails individual selection, training mechanisms, coaching apparatuses, and medical and anti-doping training,” the GYMMAF president said.

A six-member team with athletes from Guyana Police Force, Phoenix Jiu Jitsu and 3-Ryu Karate Club will represent Guyana at the tournament, marking the country’s second outing at an International Mixed Martial Federation (IMMAF) event, following their showing at the World Championships in Abu Dhabi earlier this year.
