GUYANA and Qatar are deepening bilateral co-operation in agriculture by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance agricultural technology and promote more sustainable and innovative farming practices.
The agreement was signed on Wednesday by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Hugh Hilton Todd, and Qatar’s Minister of Municipality, His Excellency Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah.
The MoU establishes a framework for co-operation in agricultural technology, emphasising the application of modern technologies to support sustainable agricultural development and strengthen the sector’s capacity in both countries.
The agreement was concluded during President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s State Visit to Qatar from September 6 to 10, further advancing the high-level engagement between the two countries.
During the visit, President Ali held official talks with His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, at the Amiri Diwan, where both sides discussed opportunities to broaden bilateral cooperation and strengthen relations between Guyana and Qatar.
Minister Todd accompanied President Ali throughout the state visit and participated in several engagements focused on expanding Guyana’s international partnerships.
Among the engagements was a special celebration of Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary, hosted by Guyana’s Ambassador to Qatar, Safraaz Shadood, and the Guyana Embassy in Doha, under the theme, “Building Guyana’s Global Brand.”
The event showcased Guyana’s people, products, and growing opportunities for international trade.
Additionally, the launch of the Guyanese UMAMI product line in the Qatari market further promoted the country’s commercial potential.
During the official talks at the Amiri Diwan, His Highness Sheikh Tamim welcomed President Ali and the Guyanese delegation, expressing hope that the visit would further advance relations and broaden opportunities for co-operation between the two countries.
