GUYANA opened their quest to qualify for the Central American and Caribbean Games Hockey Championship, with a 1-0 loss to Puerto Rico yesterday.
It was certainly not the start to their campaign that coach Philip Fernandes was hoping for, as Josefina Freaney netted in the 48th minute for what turned out to be the game’s winning goal.
Guyana will be competing against Puerto Rico, and Jamaica and hosts Bermuda for a chance to be one of two teams to advance to the CAC Games next May in El Salvador.
The country’s hockey ladies will now shift their attention to their next match against Bermuda on April 16. They will close their participation on April 17 against Jamaica.
Guyana last competed in the CAC games back in 2018 when the team finished in seventh place out of eight.
Seven players remain from the team that contested the last CAC Games which incidentally was the last time Guyana competed internationally.
Those players are goalkeeper Alysa Xavier, Trisha Woodroffe, Marzana Fiedtkou, Samantha Fernandes, Princessa Wilkie, captain Gabriella Xavier and the recently recalled defensive stalwart Ulrica Sutherland.
Sarah Klautky, Abosaide Cadogan, and Claysa Bobb, midfielder Madison Fernandes and defenders Kezia Chinian, Makeda Harding, Mickelly Rahaman and Kirsten Gomes are all making their International outdoor debut.
The National Sports Commission (NSC), GTT, John Fernandes Group of Companies and the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) are listed as the team’s sponsors. (Rawle Toney)
