GUYANA Men’s and Women’s teams finished with a bronze medal each at this year’s Senior Caribbean table tennis Championships which is ongoing in Havana, Cuba.
The male and female teams battled hard but went down to eventual champions Puerto Rico (male) and Cuba (female) respectively when the semi-finals of the events were held on Friday.
In the other Women’s semi-final, Dominican Republic had edged past Puerto Rico 3-2, while in the other male semi-finals, Cuba had defeated the Dominican Republic 3-1.
The losing semi-finals finished joint third.
GOOD BATTLE
In Guyana’s women’s semi-final, Olympian Chelsea Edghill surged to a 3-1 win against Cuba’s Idalys Lovet (11-8, 8-11, 11-4, 11-7), but Natalie Cummings and Priscilla Greaves fell to Daniela Fonseca and Karla Perez respectively.
Edghill then took on former Caribbean singles champion Fonseca and lost 3-0.

Earlier in the day, Guyana females got past Trinidad and Tobago 3-2. Edghill whipped Imani Edwards-Taylor 3-0 (11-3, 11-8, 11-4) before Cummings went down to Rheann Chung 3-1 (11-13, 11-8, 8-11, 6-11).
Greaves also lost her game by a scoreline of 3-0 when she played Chloe Fraser (4-11, 9-11, 9-11).
Edghill was able to draw the series with her second win when she played Chung (12-10, 11-7, 11-5) before Cummings sealed an overall victory with a 3-0 (11-2, 11-5, 11-5) win against Edwards-Taylor.
MALE SEMIS
In the male semis, national champion Christopher Franklin fell to Puerto Rico’s Oscar Birriel. The games, however, were very close, Birriel won 11-7, 16-14, 12-10.
Former Caribbean U21 champion Shemar Britton drew the series even when he defeated Richard Pietri 3-0 (11-6, 14-12, 11-5). Daniel Gonzalez carried Puerto Rico ahead with an 11-7, 11-6 and 11-8 victory against rising 15-year-old star Jonathan Van Lange, before Birriel defeated Britton 3-1 (11-6, 8-11, 12-10, 11-9) in the fourth.
Earlier in the day, Guyana had defeated Barbados 3-2.
Tyrese Knight had defeated Franklin 3-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-6) before Britton had the better of Kevin Farley 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 12-10).
Van Lange had also claimed a win when he got past Ramon Maxwell 3-2 (11-8, 6-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-2).
Britton then lost to Knight 1-3 (7-11, 3-11, 11-7, 8-11), before Franklin defeated Farley 3-0 (12-10, 11-7, 11-6) to seal the win.
The singles competition started late yesterday.
