A 21-year-old barber, who was charged for trafficking 16 grammes of cannabis, was, on Monday, sentenced to three years in prison and fined $10,000.
Shem Winter of Tabatinga Central Rupununi, Region 9, appeared before Magistrate Allen Wilson at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that on November 21, he had cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
According to reports, on the day in question, police, acting on information received, intercepted a green Premio motorcar bearing registration number PRR 4548, which was proceeding on the Tabatinga access road.
There were three occupants in the vehicle including Winter. Winter was searched and a bulky transparent plastic bag was found in his pants crotch containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis sativa.
Winter was also told of the offence committed and under caution, he told the police, “yes officer is me own”. He was later charged and placed before the court.
