The benefits of studying Psychology.

AS you all can imagine, this piece is very near and dear to my heart. I have had so many people reach out to me to ask where they can study Psychology in Guyana and how to go about doing so. This piece will not only discuss an option, but also describe the benefits of studying psychology –- of which there are so many.

Psychology is the study of the mind and behaviour and it can take you so many places. A degree in Psychology gives one valuable research, communication, problem and conflict-resolution skills — to name a few.

You use this knowledge to better not only your mental health, but also those around you. Psychology allows you to learn more about your emotions and actions as well as those of others. Why do we do certain things? Why do we feel this way? What can we do to continue or change these patterns? Studying Psychology is the answer to all these questions. Can you imagine understanding underlying feelings, emotions and behaviours? It gives you an edge on personal growth and success.

You can learn to gather, analyse and distribute important data, something that is seriously lacking in Guyana right now. Speaking of that, there is a positive job outlook, as Psychologists are a rare find in Guyana.

Good communication skills is also critical to everyday life. You learn both verbal and non-verbal cues that help you to better understand and build healthy relationships and be free of conflict. It gives you a different perspective on many situations; it simply opens the mind to possibilities.

Keep in mind that a degree in Psychology does not only lead to becoming a psychologist but teaching, researching, sales, employment counsellor, opportunities in human resources and so much more.

The training also helps you to develop serious empathy and compassion for others. It teaches you balance, the ability to handle stress, happiness, gratitude, motivation and how to live a better quality life. Think about it as a self-help career where you can faster reach personal goals. It’s fascinating and intriguing.

However, as a Psychologist, I think the best part is the ability to help others help themselves. There is no greater feeling than watching people progress into their best selves and saving the lives of those who have little to no hope. You can make a massive difference.

And now there is a new and exciting option of studying Psychology in Guyana.

We now have the opportunity in Guyana to study for both a first degree and a Masters of Psychology through the University of Bedfordshire in the United Kingdom. These courses are offered at Nations School of Business and Management. Both of these are internationally recognised programmes that students can pursue here in Guyana. These programmes will start in September. If the pandemic continues, the courses will be offered online and once the pandemic passes the teaching will resume face to face.

The programmes include courses in: occupational health, psychological assessment, managing people and stress, perception and action as well as individual differences and research. “Nations” is drawing on the best expertise available in Guyana and overseas. The cost for the whole Masters is US$7,700 and it can be completed in about 15 to 18 months. To pursue the same type of programme in the UK or North America will cost about four or five times more.
