JAMAICA’S Olympic Gold medallist Briana Williams is dedicating her top prize to her grandma Nenna, who passed away shortly after the youngest member of the Jamaican team left for Tokyo.

It was supposed to be excitement galore when the newly minted Olympic medallist arrived home, but the sad news of her grandmother put a damper on her jubilation.

Briana Williams, who helped Jamaica to a national record and the 4x100m title in Tokyo, was greeted by her mom at the airport, who broke the sad news.

Shortly after learning about her grandma’s death, the 19-year-old Olympic Champion informed her social media followers, who poured out their hearts in condolences.

“Just got home and found out that my dear grandmother, who lived with us, passed away soon after I left for the Olympics. They wisely decided to wait until after Tokyo to tell me. I dedicate my Olympic gold medal to her memory and for all she poured into me. Sleep well, Nenna. Thank you. I love you,” she wrote on Facebook.

Within two hours nearly six thousand fans were reacting with sadness emojis and words of sympathy and encouragement. (CNW)
