Woman accused of setting lover on fire granted bail

SAMANTHA Dey, who allegedly threw a flammable substance on the father of her children and set him on fire, on Friday, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was placed on $50,000 bail by Magistrate Leron Daly.

Dey denied that on December 8, 2020, at William Street, Kitty, she unlawfully and maliciously caused grievous bodily harm to Jermain Robertson with intent to maim, disfigure or disable him.

According to the prosecution, Dey and Robertson share two children and were living together prior to the incident. On the day the incident occurred, Robertson returned home, placed his phone to charge and went to bed.

He later noticed his phone missing and enquired about its location from Dey. Dey informed Robertson that she was in possession of it and this resulted in an argument.

The argument escalated when Dey threw methylated spirits on Robertson. She then threw a lit lighter on him. Robertson was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was admitted and discharged on December 19, 2020.

The matter was reported and Dey was arrested and later charged for the offence.

The matter was adjourned until August 6, 2021.
