… Masters, Females. Juniors in action

THE Guyana Cycling Federation’s (GCF) National Cycling Championships is scheduled to conclude this morning with the Females, Masters and Juniors/Juveniles in action in Mahaica.
Cyclists will battle over 25 miles and 50 miles respectively around a circuit that is 6.25 miles long.

According to information from the federation, cyclists will pedal off from KK Gas Station up New Road and down Old Road in Mahaica for the finish.

The event is set to pedal off at 07:30hrs. Females will race around the circuit four times for a total of 25 miles, while the Masters and Junior/Juveniles will race over eight laps for a grand total of 50 miles.

With the seniors having already completed their events, the other big names in the sport will look to claim their stake today.

In the Female Division, Suzanne Hamilton, who won the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Independence Three-Stage event this month, will look for another clean sweep.
When she competed in the five-mile time trials last Saturday, she registered a comfortable two-plus minute victory.

Hamilton surged to 19:59.20. Clivecia Spencer finished second in a time of 22:18.31, while Shenika Tiexeira finished third in 24:34.37.
Thirteen-year-old Alecia Crandon placed fourth in 25:16.06 and Selena Stephens fifth in 29:07:18.

Also looking for a clean sweep of the National Championships will be Stephen Fernandes, who was outstanding in the 10-mile-long Masters battle at last Saturday’s time trials.

Fernandes (31:37.84), finished over 45 seconds ahead of Paul Choo-wee-nam (32.23.77). Jaikarran Sukhai placed third in that race and should also be in the thick of things today.
The Junior division will be another exciting battle, since last Saturday’s time trial winner, 13-year-old Alex Leung will be the cyclist to beat.

He finished over 11 seconds ahead of Sherwin Sampson and 16 plus seconds ahead of Aaron Newton.
David Hicks, who won the Independence Three-Stage event, will look to rebound from his fourth-place finish at the time trials.

Mario Washington, who won the first stage of the Independence Meet and place overall, will also look to rebound from his fifth position at the time trials.
