BRAZILIAN, Makeal Jackson Da Silva, was, on Wednesday, sentenced to four and a half years in prison for the unlawful killing of Ked Lewis known as “Keno” or “Kennedy” at Dukwari Backdam, Cuyuni River, in 2016. Da Silva was initially charged with the capital offence of murder in December, 2016, to which he pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison. He subsequently pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter. Da Silva, who was on remand since December 2016, was released from prison based on time spent in pre-trial custody. He was represented by attorney-at-law Ravindra Mohabir, while Tiffany Lyken appeared on behalf of the State. It is understood that the accused will be released and deported to Brazil. Based on information received, he had entered Guyana illegally. According to the police reports, the body of Lewis, who was a miner of Quataman Village, North Rupununi, was found in a pit with multiple wounds at Dukwari Backdam. The report stated that the defendant and Lewis were seen leaving their mining camp but only Da Silva, returned to the camp.
