Fisherman feared dead after falling into Waini River

A fisherman is feared dead after his feet became entangled with a fishing net, causing him to fall out of the boat he was travelling in and into the mouth of the Waini River, North West District, Region One (Barima-Waini). According to reports, a search was launched for the man who has since been identified as 45-year-old Vickram Hardowar, of Uitvlugt, West Coast of Demerara (WCD). Reports are that at around 4:30hrs on Monday, Hardowar, who was part of a six-man crew, was tossing a fishing seine into the ocean, some 65 miles offshore, when his feet got entangled with the net and he fell overboard. Members of the six-man crew told police that they tossed two life jackets in his direction and was in the process of turning the boat around, when they heard him shout for help three times before going under. The men said they searched the area but couldn’t find him.
As a result, the crew went to the Morawhanna Police Station and reported the matter. The men are presently at the Mabaruma Police Station assisting with the investigations.
