… promises All-Star clash for Essequibo cricketers

THE DEVON Ramnauth Region Two Youth Development Cricket League will be played again this year, according to the organiser of the event.
Ramnauth, a former national youth cricketer, said he was impressed with the quality of cricket during the tournament and is heartened that he is playing a part in developing the young players in his home county. The Canada-based Essequibian pointed out that there was a need for the event to become annual in the calendar of Essequibo cricket.“The tournament was a big success because we got to see the talent of all the youths.”
The tournament, which concluded this month, was originally scheduled for last year, but due to the pandemic and then the rain, it was postponed several times until it was held in the first quarter of this year.

“My second tournament, which is the 2021 tournament, will be played in August. However, I am not done with this tournament as yet … I am going to have an All-star game very soon with just Essequibo players … From that, I’m going to pick a team and we will play Pomeroon. After that, we plan on doing the bridging initiative with the rest of the county of Essequibo….” He said that when the tournament is played again this year, more teams will compete.
“Initially we wanted eight teams, but we only got six, we will encourage more teams to come out. We will keep it as club cricket so that the youngsters can be steered in the right direction by older members of the teams.” He said that he also intends to increase the overs from a T20 tournament, so as to give the players exposure to a different type of cricket, while he also plans to decrease the “out of town players”, .so that our local players can benefit more, the ones who will go on to represent Essequibo county.”

The winning side, Queenstown U-19, have several such players and they proved their might when they stormed to an unbeaten run during the competition.
In the final, they made light work of Reliance Hustlers. Queenstown batted first and scored 185-3 off their 20 overs with Seon Glasgow and Carl Gilgeous scoring 59 not out and 53 not out respectively. In reply, Hustlers could only muster 46, before they were bowled out. Glasgow took 5-10 in 3.3 overs and Jason Holder 3-7 from four overs.
