Soca Warriors humble Golden Jaguars 3 – 0
THE Golden Jaguars 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign got off to a rocky start when they went down 3 – 0 to Trinidad and Tobago in the Dominican Republic last night.
Levi Garcia opened the Trinidadians account in the seventh minute after he slipped by Kadell Daniel and placed his right-footed shot past Akel Clarke in goal at the ‘first post’. Sheldon Bateau, in the 15th minute, was lucky enough to beat Clarke for Guyana’s second goal.
Clarke would then show his goalkeeping skills when he saved Joevin Jones from the penalty mark, when Trayon Bobb fouled Ryan Telfer in the ‘18’.
However, Clarke would blunder at the back when there was a break-down in communication with Terrence Vancooten, which saw Telfer easily tucked in Trinidad’s third goal in the 44th minute.
Keanu Marsh-Brown, Callum Harriott, Bobb and Emery Welshman had their few chances either saved, coming off the ‘wood-work’ or going just wide of the mark.
The last time Guyana lost 3 – 0 to Trinidad was November 15, 2011 in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. That game was of no consequence since Guyana had won 2 – 1 four days prior at the Guyana National Stadium to knock T&T out of the qualifiers.
Prior to 2011, we lost 3 – 0 to T&T in 2008 and then before that April of 1997.
The last time Guyana defeated Trinidad was November 11, 2011, in the 2014 FIFA Brazil World Cup Qualifier. Prior to that, Guyana won 4 – 2 in Port-of-Spain on August 20, 1978. The Golden Jaguars have lost 15 of their 23 meetings against Trinidad, winning two and drawing six.
Guyana will next face the Bahamas on March 30 in the Dominican Republic. (Rawle Toney)
