On that day also, the World Health Organisation (WHO) finally declared that the spread of COVID-19 a pandemic.

According to a report from the Department of Public Information (DPI), the Prime Minister called the publication timely and underscored the importance of utilising the media as a tool not only to chronicle events, but also to educate and inform the public.

Furthermore, he underscored, “Particularly interesting is the ‘Deep South’ story, because I’ve gone there and I can tell you that these people are very serious in their approach to COVID-19, in some communities they have actually erected gates with guards”.

The story the Prime Minister referenced was a feature on the communities in the Deep South area of the Rupununi, in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) and the COVID-19 measures they adopted to keep their communities safe from the dreaded virus.

Additionally, the special publication featured stories on the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on Guyana’s economy and local businesses, the agricultural sector, the legal system and the education sector. Furthermore, there were also features on families who were affected by the virus and lost their loved ones, and on the frontline workers who have been offering their services to the nation throughout the ordeal.
