STANLEY Edwards, 35, was convicted for manslaughter and sentenced to 11 years in prison by Justice Simone Morris- Ramlall at the Berbice Assizes on Thursday.
Edwards had earlier pleaded guilty to the unlawful killing of Sahadeo Sankar, 40, a fisherman of Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, on January 3, 2018.
Sankar’s lifeless body was discovered in front of a grocery store in the area. He was stomped to death by Edwards. Both men had been seen consuming alcohol prior to the incident. State Prosecutor, Tuanna Hardy told the court that, on the day in question, the two men were involved in an altercation during which Sankar fell and Edwards took the opportunity to stomp the defenceless man Handing down the sentence, the judge noted that Sankar’s life was senselessly taken away after an argument while consuming alcohol. Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall started the sentence ceiling at 21 years, deducting seven years for the guilty plea, and three years for time served. The remainder 11 years was imposed as the period of imprisonment.
