Record-breaking West Indies Test batsman, Kyle Mayers, said he plans to continue from where he left off come the second match, adding that prolonging his international career is the main priority.
The Bajan had one of the most intriguing Test debuts in recent times and arguably one of the most historic in West Indies cricket history.
The left-hander became only the 5th batsman in history to smash a double-century on debut, stroking a majestic 210 from 310 deliveries, inclusive of 20 fours and 7 maximums.
More importantly, the West Indies shot their way back into the driver’s seat and pulled off what would be the fifth highest successful run chase in history and the largest in the continent of Asia.
“Truly, I wasn’t looking at the target, I was just trying to stick to my game plan for as long as possible. I was trying not to look at the scoreboard. I knew within myself that if we bat the whole day, my team will cross the line, “said Mayers during the virtual post-match interview.
Mayers created more history with fellow debutant, Jamaican Nkrumah Bonner who sadly missed out on a century, but made a classy 86 and shared a 4th wicket partnership of 216 with the Bajan.
The partnership was unique as it was also the Caribbean side’s highest 4th innings partnership since 1984. Speaking on the multiple feats achieved in the one match, the Barbados player said he was just pleased to be a part of the winning outcome.
“It’s a great feeling to be playing Test cricket then to go on and score a century and then to make it a double and then going on to win this Test. A guy making his debut and making a double should inspire all youngsters to work hard and reach this level,” he said.
The West Indies successful chase of 395 now firmly places them in contention to win the series unless Bangladesh manage a win or a draw.
Regarding his plans for the final match, Mayers said he was placing emphasis on ensuring he prolongs his international career and wants to sign off the series with more runs and a win for his team.
“I am a student of the game. I will try to learn as much from this innings and take it to the next game where I start from zero. I don’t want to be a one-hit wonder; I want to be successful and consistent for the duration of my career. I always believe that scoring runs is important”, he ended.
