….after breaking into house of elderly woman

A SUSPECTED thief was caught by some residents of Belfield, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Sunday morning and dealt a sound thrashing before he was handed over to the police.
The man, who is yet to be identified, allegedly broke into the home of 85-year-old Ivan Lyken, who resides in the village, and stole some food items, valuables and cash. Lyken said she woke up at around 01:00 hours to use to the washroom and then retired to bed.
Shortly after, she saw a “figure” removing her handbag from the bedside and so she started to scream.
“I woke up and when I turn, I see this man just pick up my bag off of the bed head and walk outside and I get up and walk behind him and start hollering for ‘thief, thief’, but by then he had gone up the road.”

The elderly woman said her handbag contained all of her personal documents.
“I didn’t mind what he take; even if he had taken gold, all I was interested in is that I get back my pension book, my ID card, my passport and all my papers.”
Lyken said the thief also made his way into her kitchen and emptied her fridge.
“He went in the fridge take out all the things, he bring out all the things and tumble it up.” He allegedly also stole two cellphones and $11,000 in cash.
According to Lyken, the perpetrator broke a part of her concrete fence to gain access to the yard, since the gate was locked with a padlock and chain. He is believed to have gained entry into the house by removing several window panes from the side of the house.
According to Lyken, the perpetrator was found by residents as he tried to hide in a neighbour’s yard; this is when he received a severe beating.
