A TWENTY-EIGHT-year-old resident of Plum Park Dam, Sophia, Georgetown, was shot in his upper left thigh by the police on Friday last, after he allegedly attempted to attack a rank of a police mobile patrol. Police, in a statement, noted that the incident occurred at around 11:00 hours at Plum Park Dam. A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media.

The Guyana Chronicle understands that a police corporal, along with three other ranks, were on mobile patrol duty when they observed four males at a roadside shop acting in a suspicious manner. According to the police release, the ranks immediately stopped to question the individuals when the suspect allegedly threw a zip-lock plastic bag on the ground.

Police claimed that the bag contained a small amount of leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis. The man subsequently ran away and made good his escape. The ranks, in their search for the individual, passed later at the same shop and noticed the man. They approached him, informed him of the offence committed and while attempting to arrest him, the individual picked up a glass bottle and attempted to hit the police corporal.

The corporal withdrew himself from the reach of the individual to avoid getting hit, however, the individual began to use a series of obscene language while he continued to advance towards the corporal and threatened him with the bottle, according to the police. The man was warned to desist, but continued, and as a result, the corporal, upon realising that he was in danger, discharged a round which hit the individual in his upper left thigh.

The rank immediately escorted the man to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). Regional Commander, Senior Superintendent, Khali Pareshram, informed the Guyana Chronicle on Sunday that the individual was discharged from the hospital on Sunday and investigations are ongoing.
