ALVIN Calder, called ‘Cheebu’ or ‘CD’, has pleaded not guilty to the unlawful killing of a man during a brawl at White Water Landing, Mahdia in 2007. Calder, formerly of Greater Diamond, East Bank Demerara, is currently on trial at the Essequibo High Court before Justice Gino Persaud. On Tuesday, Calder was indicted for manslaughter and his trial commenced before a 12-member jury. He denied that, on April 12, 2007, at White Water Landing, Mahdia, he killed Joseph Willie. The Guyana Chronicle had reported that Calder had told police that Willie owed him money and was refusing to honour his debt. On the day in question, the men were involved in an argument over the outstanding money. It is alleged that Willie, armed with a cutlass confronted Calder. However, Calder ran away and fired a gun in Willie’s direction. Willie was hit and later succumbed to his injuries. Calder was later arrested in Georgetown.
