Brazilian miner with abdominal pain dies in hammock

POLICE are probing the death of a Brazilian miner, called “Piawi” (only name given). The man, who was employed on a gold mining operation, died on Wednesday around 19:00 hours at Sand Hill Oku Backdam. Investigations have revealed that the 55-year-old man was employed at the mining operation for the past six weeks, and on the aforementioned time and day, he was in a hammock inside the camp when he complained to other workers of pains and swelling in his abdomen. Efforts were made to acquire transportation to take him to receive medical attention, but the man became motionless whilst waiting.  He was subsequently transported to the Bartica Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on Thursday at 14:10 hours.
The incident was reported to the police as investigations continue.
