SOME 19 students, 10 teachers and eight staff members from dormitory schools across the country have been tested positive for COVID-19, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony reported on Thursday. Minister Anthony noted that the necessary precautions have been taken and these persons have been isolated. “We continue to do testing because not all of the students are out; and so as they come out we’re testing them and depending on the results we’re able to take action,” the minister said. Public schools in Guyana reopened for the new school term on Monday following a two-week Christmas vacation. All students and teachers who will be returning to dorms across the country will be tested. The students who have been tested positive are said to be asymptomatic, which means that they are not exhibiting symptoms of the virus. Common symptoms include fever, dry cough and tiredness. Less common symptoms and severe symptoms include sore throat, headache, loss of taste or smell, and difficulty breathing. Minister Anthony gave the assurance that while in isolation, the students will be provided educational materials to continue learning.
