Six GPL units to boost capacity for Christmas season

-four more placed ‘in reserve’

THE Guyana Power and light Inc. (GPL) has announced the arrival of six 1.6 Megawatt (MW) Caterpillar Units which were purchased to boost generating capacity for the holiday season.
Three of the units will be installed at GPL’s Sophia, Georgetown location, while the other three will be installed at GPL’s Onverwagt (West Berbice) location.

A statement from GPL noted that an additional four units, with a total capacity of 6.4MW, have been placed on stand-by by the supplier in case there is a failure of any of the six units purchased by GPL.

Three of these reserved units will be placed at GPL’s Canefield (East Berbice) location and one at GPL’s Anna Regina (Essequibo Coast) location.
“The arrival of these units is in keeping with our company’s commitment to boost generation capacity and provide customers in the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) with reliable electricity,” GPL noted.

The six power modules and associated transformers were procured at a cost of $475,422,029 and $80,886,430 respectively.
“GPL wishes to reassure customers that our Company will spare no effort in ensuring that all customers have access to a reliable service of the highest quality.”
