GUYANA’S Matthew Briggs inked a two-year deal with one of Denmark’s most successful clubs, Vejle Boldklub FC.
The move will see Briggs, who up to last season, held the record for being the youngest player to ever feature in the English Premier League with Fulham FC, competing in the Danish Superliga, the top pro-league in Denmark.
Briggs, 29, played for England at the U-16, U-17, U-19, U-20 and U-21 levels and made his debut for Guyana in 2015. He has since been a solid part of the Golden Jaguars’ squad.

This is not the defender’s first time in Denmark, having played for the Copenhagen-based HB Køge last season.
In an interview on the team’s website, Manager Jacob Krüger said he was impressed with Briggs during his stint with HB Køge.
“Briggs,”, Krüger added, “has the image of a defender who has good skills with the ball and has good conditions, physically, which he has substantiated during the last few weeks’ stay in Vejle. He has been used on the left back, and here he has shown that he can also bid. Matthew is an experienced player who comes with matches at all levels in the English league system.”

“Matthew can be used both on the back and as a left midfielder, and with the approach we get more options in the back chain. With the signing of the contract, we once again add strength in the air to the squad, and then we have also found a defender with speed, which he has shown in several of the matches already, where he has excelled in the field,” Krüger said.

Meanwhile, speaking exclusively with Chronicle Sport following his signing, Briggs, who also played for Watford, Millwall and Colchester United in England, called his journey to Superliga side one that came in full circle, while reasoning that “it feels so good that all my hard work has paid off.”
After three seasons with Colchester, Briggs found himself down the ladder of top-flight English football, with stops at Maldon & Tiptree FC and Coggeshall Town before joining HB Køge Nordicbet LIGA in 2019, just before playing for Guyana at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
“Sometimes when you drop down the leagues in your career it’s not easy to come back up and that’s what makes it a greater feeling” and to be back playing top flight football is amazing for me and I’m going to keep working hard to stay there (at Vejle Boldklub FC),” Briggs said.
