Some issues at NIS which should be addressed

CONGRATULATIONS on your appointment as minister responsible for labour. From your first press conference I know you are serious about seeing justice done for workers not only in the private sector, but also in the public sector.

Permit me Sir to bring to your attention two matters that affect staff of the Records Section of the National Insurance Scheme located at Camp Street, Georgetown.
The staff is operating in an unbearable atmosphere and this has been so for a long time despite many verbal complaints by those who go through this torture. There is an urgent need for more fans to be installed, as there are staff there with serious health issues who suffer in silence for fear of being victimised. Additionally, there is no rotation of staff, but rather, a full complement of over 40 operatives in a space that does not allow for social distancing.

Administration has not been taking this matter seriously. This is a serious health hazard, taking into consideration the COVID-19 risks.
Not only is there a pattern of absenteeism, but there is also a negative attitude towards performance which is definitely a loss to the organisation. Also Sir, in the section there is an individual who exhibits signs of mental disorder; he has no respect for authority and behaves as though he is the highest level of authority. Not only does he disrespect and defy supervisors by using derogatory remarks to all and sundry, but openly boasts about his relationship with the general manager and about ‘other connections.’

His loud outbursts could be heard almost on a daily basis and these continue almost until he is spent. This sort of behaviour terrifies the staff as there is always the fear that he could become violent. His presence is most unsuitable to an office and Honourable Minister, I would be most grateful if through your good office steps are taken to have this arrogant employee relocated to an environment more suitable to his questionable personality and limited intelligence.
