THREE men, who are each currently serving 80 years in prison for the 2012 murder of gold miner Glen Xavier, have now moved to the Appeal Court to have their conviction and sentence overturned.
In 2017, a 12-member jury unanimously delivered a guilty verdict on Fizal Moore, called “Hard-Mouth”; Stephan Campbell, called “Burnham”; and Roy Yokum, called “Ray Ray” for murdering Xavier at Cornbread Minimart on D’Urban Street, Werk-en-Rust. Xavier, who is said to have been killed in the furtherance of a robbery on May 8, 2012, died of gunshot injuries.

As a result of the guilty verdict, Justice Navindra Singh imposed an 80-year sentence each on the trio at the Georgetown High Court.

The trio is now contending that the conviction cannot stand, since the trial judge erred in Law while handling the matter at the level of the High Court. As such, the men are asking that it be set aside along with the sentence.

On May 8, 2012, Glen Xavier and his friend, Orin John, were having a few ‘drinks’ at the popular D’Urban Street, Werk-en-Rust bar when two men arrived on ‘CG’ motorcycles and under gun-point demanded that they hand over whatever money and jewellery they had on them at the time. But despite the fact that both men complied with their assailants’ demands, they still shot them and made good their escape.

Xavier, 32, of Harlem, West Coast Demerara, died from shock and hemorrhage due to the gunshot he took in the abdomen, while John, 48, of St. Cuthbert’s Mission, though he was shot in the shoulder, survived after a spell in hospital.
