The body of a 74-year-old pensioner from Martindale, Lower Pomeroom was fished out from a trench in the area on Tuesday evening.

Dead is Morris Edwards aka ‘Bud’. The incident reportedly occurred on July 28 between 14:00 hours and 17:15 hours.

According to his niece, Diana Watson, her uncle left to go to the Charity Post Office where he collected his old age pension. On returning home, around 13:00hrs, he had in his possession a bottle of rum and a an aerated drink.

He then informed her that he was going to purchase ice for his drink in the area. However, around 17:15 hour, the niece received information from a villager, that her uncle was seen lying motionless on his back in a trench.

An alarm was raised and several persons rushed to the area and the man’s body was fished out of the water.

Police later visited the area and reports are that there were no marks of violence on the man’s body. The niece told police her uncle usually suffers from tuberculosis.

His body was escorted to the Charity Hospital where he was pronounced dead by a doctor. The pensioner’s body is currently at the Suddie Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.
