Man dies in Providence accident

A 53-year-old pedal cyclist was on Wednesday night stuck down and killed along the Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

Dead is Andray Simmons of lot 94 Parker Street.

The Guyana Chronicle was informed that the accident occurred around shortly after 18:00 hours.Simmons was struck by a motorcar bearing registration PVV 1380 which was driven by a 30-year-old resident of Belle West Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara.

The driver of the motor car told police that he was proceeding north along the eastern driving lane of the Western carriageway on the Providence Public Road when, while in the vicinity of the National Stadium, the pedal cyclist rode across the road from west to east and ended up into his path.

As a result of the collision Simmons was flung onto the car bonnet,hitting the front window screen of the motor car; he landed on the ground.

Simmons was picked up in a unconscious state by public spirited citizens and placed in the said motor car where he was transported to the Diamond Diagnostic Center.
He was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who pronounced him dead on arrival.

A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver of the motorcar and no trace of alcohol was found.The driver is currently in police custody assisting with investigation.
