Rape accused to face new trial

RAPE accused Stephen McCurdy called ‘Jaganie’ will have to stand a new trial after a 12-member jury failed to reach a verdict on Thursday, February 20, 2020.

McCurdy, also known as Shermon Jackson, was on trial before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow at the Sexual Offences Court of the High Court, Georgetown, accused of raping a woman on November 19, 2017.

The jury was unable to reach a verdict for the indictment which resulted in McCurdy having to be retried at the next practical sitting of the Demerara Assizes. He will remain on bail.
According to reports, the victim was known to McCurdy and, during the period in question, she was staying with his family.

It is alleged that, on the day in question, McCurdy came home drunk and was banging on the door of the woman’s room since his wardrobe was inside the same room.
The victim finally opened the room door and McCurdy changed his clothes and left. He later returned and begged the victim to have sex with him.

The woman refused and McCurdy raped her. The matter was reported to the police and he was arrested.
