Youths imprisoned on separate charges

MAGISTRATE Dylon Bess on Tuesday sentenced two youths to six months in prison on separate charges of escaping police custody and armed robbery.

Twenty-one-year-old Daniel Boutrin appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and changed his plea to guilty.

Particulars of the charge stated that on March 17, 2019, while in custody at the East La Penitence Police Station for the charge of using threatening language, Boutrin escaped.
According to information presented to the court, Boutrin was sentenced before for wounding his sister; his sister had told the court that he breached the protection order that had been issued against him.

Alfred Taylor, 23, a mason, also changed his plea from not guilty to guilty after he appeared before the magistrate.

The first charge stated that on June 27, 2019 at Stabroek Market, he robbed Keith James of a Samsung cellular phone, a silver band, and cash totalling $116,000.

The second charge stated that on the same day and at the same location, he robbed Akash Persaud of a Samsung cellular phone valued at $37,000.

According to reports, Taylor entered a Route 47 minibus in which James and Persaud were seated. Shortly after, Taylor began firing several lashes at both James and Persaud and demanded that they hand over their belongings; Taylor then exited the bus and escaped.
James and Persaud raised an alarm and public-spirited persons managed to apprehend Taylor and handed him over to the police. A search was conducted and the items were found on his person; consequently, he was arrested and charged.

Magistrate Bess sentenced the youths to six months each and ordered that the time they spent on remand be deducted.
