RAPE accused, Romal Jewan, will have to undergo a new trial after a 12-member jury remained hung in its verdict, even after further deliberations, on Thursday, October 3, 2019.
Jewan of Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, was on trial before Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall at the Sexual Offences Court of High Court, Georgetown for raping a 13-year-old girl on September 7, 2012.
The defendant was represented by Attorneys Pamela and Brandon DaSantos, while the State’s case was presented by Prosecutor Tariq Mohamed.
The jury, after almost four hours of deliberation, was unable to reach a verdict. Jewan will be retried at the next practical sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
