Fraud accused granted bail

SENIOR Magistrate Clive Nurse, on Thursday, September 5, 2019, granted bail to two construction workers who were charged with conspiracy to commit Felony.
Ganesh Singh, 32, of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara and Benvolio Valenski, called Roy Anthony Sewnarine, 28, of Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Particulars of the first charge stated that, between February 1, 2019, and September 2, 2019, at Georgetown, the duo, with intent to defraud, conspired with each other to produce one Republic of Guyana Driver’s License in the name of Roy Anthony Sewnarine, purporting to show that same was issued by the Guyana Revenue Authority.

The second charge stated that, between February 1, 2019, and September 2, 2019, at Georgetown, the duo, with intent to defraud, conspired with each other to forge one Guyana Identification Card in favor of ‘Roy Anthony Sewnarine’ purporting to show that same was issued by the Guyana Elections Commission.

Valenski was also slapped with two separate charges and he pleaded not guilty to them.
It is alleged that, on September 2, 2019, at Central Immigration and Passport Office, Camp Street, Georgetown, with intent to defraud, he uttered to Towanna Crandon- Primo, woman police constable, an Immigration Officer, the forged Identification Card in favour of himself, purporting to show that same was issued by the Guyana Elections Commission.
It was also alleged that, on September 2, 2019, at Central Immigration and Passport Office in Georgetown, for purpose of procuring a new passport, he made a false statement that is to say he signed to a written declaration stating that he was ‘Roy Anthony Sewnarine’ knowing same to be false.

According to reports Singh and Valenski are known to each other.

It is alleged that Valenski resided in the United States of America since he was eight years old. He returned to Guyana in January 2019. Upon his arrival, Valenski met Singh and told him that he needed an identification card, a birth certificate, and a driver’s license.
The men made arrangements and Valenski paid Singh $200,000. He also provided a passport-sized photograph and requested that the documents be issued in the name of Roy Anthony Sewnarine. Singh later handed the documents to Valenski.

On September 2, 2019, Valenski went to the Central Immigration and Passport Office with the documents given to him by Singh and applied for a passport.
The documents were examined by Immigration Officer Crandon- Primo and they were found to be forged.

Valenski was arrested and taken to the Criminal Investigation Department, where a further investigation was carried out.

Magistrate Nurse granted Singh $200,000 bail, while Valenski was released on $300,000 bail. The matter was adjourned until September 11, 2019, and was transferred to the Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
