Young brothers critical after burns

FOUR-year-old Ghansham Sohan and his one-year-old brother, Besham Soham, are critical after being burnt.

According to information from the Saving Hands Emergency Aid Inc (SHEA) Foundation, the boys’ mother lit some materials to drive away mosquitoes, but she turned away for a minute and her older son threw dry grass into the fire, causing it to flare up.

“It flared up and caught their clothes…they were badly burnt,” said a representative of SHEA, Sita Sugrim in an invited comment on Tuesday.

The family rushed the children to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where they remain patients. Besham is on life-support and his older brother is very critical. “Unfortunately, the advanced medical treatment they require is not available in Guyana; therefore, they must be urgently transported via medevac to the United States for life-saving treatment,” said SHEA in a post on its Facebook Page.

The organisation received an urgent request to assist with arranging for medical assistance in the US. According to the organisation, the cost of the air ambulance is US$45,000 and depending on the length of the follow-up treatment, it can range from US$7,500 to US$15,000 each trip and due to the severity there will be at least four follow-up trips.

“We need to pay for air ambulance, housing, meals and other logistical expenses so we are calling on persons to make a donation… Please help us to help these children, by making a donation towards their medical expenses and medical air transport,” said the foundation.
