YOUNG Guyanese cyclist Romello Crawford continues to make a name for himself with a couple of creditable performances on the USA circuit.

Crawford, who hails from the Ancient County, has so far lined up in four overseas meets for the year and has impressed with two podium finishes.

Crawford has so far lit up ‘The Tour of Somerville’ in the Category 2 event.

Guyanese Romello Crawford competed in ‘I will Foundation Tuesday Night Race Series’ in Brooklyn, NY on the June 4.

Over 50 U.S. Cycling Hall of Fame inductees have raced in Somerville, including Tour de France champions. The event has become known as ‘The Kentucky Derby of Cycling’, and draws international Olympians and top cyclists from around the world.

The 20-year-old turned in a strong performance throughout the 30-miler (criterium racing) to come out on top over an estimated 200 starters, winning the Men’s Open Category 2 contest in a time of 49:29:00.

Just recently Crawford secured another podium finish in the ‘I will Foundation Tuesday Night Race Series’ in Brooklyn, NY on June 4. He finished second behind 2018 winner Edwin Morel in the 21-mile tussle.

Crawford told this publication “My experience was frightening at first because I had to compete in crits racing – criterium is a bike race consisting of several laps around a closed circuit – which is a different type from what I’m used to. The races were difficult because of the presence of strong teams and many pros turned out for the races, but I always believed in myself to come out on top”.

Notably for his eye-catching efforts Crawford just this week was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by Mayor Ted R. Green of East Orange, NY.

Crawford will continue to put “pedal to metal” with his next race assignment scheduled for this weekend in Harlem, NY. (Colin Bynoe)
