SHERWIN Prince, 44, of Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, was on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, arraigned before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for obtaining money by false pretence.
Prince is accused of impersonating a police officer and swindling a man of $75,000 by claiming that he could have assisted him in getting his divorce case dismissed at the High Court.
Prince denied that between May 22, 2019, and May 23, 2019, at Georgetown, with intent to defraud, he obtained the sum of $75,000 from Ewart Mathill, by pretending that he was in a position to have a divorce matter dismissed.
According to reports, Mathill is before the High Court involved in a divorce matter. It is alleged that the victim was approached by Prince, who pretended to be a police officer and claimed that he could have the matter dismissed for $100,000. The victim paid $75,000 to Prince and promised to pay the remainder later.
However, Mathill enquiried about Prince and learnt that the man was not a police officer, but a known fraudster. The matter was reported to the police and Prince was arrested during a “sting” operation.
Prince was unrepresented by counsel and was granted $60,000 bail by Magistrate McGusty. The matter was adjourned until June 19, 2019.
