Athletes from every region to compete at GOBSA’s 4th Independence Track & Field Meet

ATHLETES from all 10 of Guyana’s administrative regions will be taking to the track in the fourth annual Independence Track and Field Championships from May 18 to 19 at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora, West Coast Demerara.

The meet, which is organised by the Guyana Overseas-Based Sports Association (GOBSA), was first introduced during Guyana’s Independence Jubilee.

At the launch of the event on Tuesday, president of the Overseas-Based Sports Association (OBSA), David Thomas, revealed that since last year plans were in the pipeline to make the meet more inclusive by involving athletes from all ten administrative regions.

Events will be run off in the Under-9, 9-11 years, 12-14 years, 15-17 years, 18 years and above and the Masters (35 years and over).

Meanwhile, Director of Sport Christopher Jones was also present at the launch and committed the National Sports Commission and the Ministry of Social Cohesion’s support for the event.

The sponsors, who have thrown their support behind the meet so far are: Forrester Lumber Yard, Banks DIH, Guyana Committee of Services, Guybisco and Sybil’s (USA-based).
An entrance fee of $300 will be charged on both competition days.
