LED by their battery of spinners, the visiting New York Tri State easily disposed of tournament favourites, the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), by eight wickets, to claim the GCA/American Youth Premier Cricket League Under-19 cricket title yesterday at the Everest Cricket Club (ECC) ground.
The Tri State spinners claimed eight wickets between them, and were the main destroyers after the Queenstown-based club won the toss and decided to bat in a match, which was reduced to 32 overs-a-side due to Thursday’s downpour in the Capital City.
From a comfortable position of 45-2, the home side were bowled out for 96 in 26.3 overs, with leg-spinner Adil Shivakumar (3-16) and left-arm spinner Tamesh Persaud (3-18) the chief wreckers.
The run chase was relatively an easy one, as the tourists reached 100-2 in 19 overs.
When play started some three-and-half hours later than the scheduled time, DCC lost opener Brandon Jaikarran (4), to medium pacer Vedant Parwal, at 21-1 inside the fourth over.
Fellow-opener Jadan Campbell and Ezekiel Wilson took the score to 45 before Campbell, who struck three boundaries was run-out for 20.
Thereafter the home team lost their way losing the remaining batsmen for just 51. Leg-spinner Gautham Ravindran trapped Tameshwar Permaul (4), leg-before-wicket before Persaud snared both Inderjit Nanan (4) and Orlando Giddings (0) off consecutive balls.
He then had Wilson caught and bowled for 22 before Muniram Singh was stumped off Shivakumar for three.
After the 20-run partnership between Osapha Green 19 (2×4, 1×6) and Kadeem Parris, off-spinner Andre Seepersaud, a guess player for the visiting side, bowled Jafar Pinder for two, before Shivakumar claimed the final wicket of Parris.
In the run chase the tourists lost Ishaan Bansal early off Muniram Singh for three but Saiteja Mukkamalla and Sanjay Stanley then added 44 runs for the second wicket before Mukkamalla went off the bowling of Pinder for 26.
The right-hander Stanley, who struck an unbeaten 41 (4×4, 1×6) in company with Chaitanya Parwal (16 not out), confirmed the victory.
