CARLOS Petterson-Griffith has his weights in hand and is ready for his final push as he prepares for his pioneering journey to Helsingborg, Sweden to take part in the World Classic Powerlifting Championship, which is scheduled for June 3-15.

Due to the distance of the event, the 25-year-old would travel on June 8, just for his leg of the competition, which is the 93kg weight class.

So far, Guyana Shore Base Inc. and Space Gym have assisted, but it will take more support to fund the trip, which would be the first for a Guyanese powerlifter. Petterson-Griffith, is no ordinary lifter. His short time in the sport has yielded incredible results. In fact, he is the current NAPF/Regional Overall Champion. That competition was held in Mexico City, Mexico last August.

At that event, he squatted 300kg, bench-pressed 165kg and deadlifted 325kg which gave him a total of 790kg and the best lifter title, which also earned him a spot in the best-of-the-best Sweden tournament, billed for next month.

“I started competing in powerlifting since 2016 with hard work, dedication and most of all, sacrifice. I’m not only one of the best in Guyana currently, I’m sharing a top-10 World Classic’s powerlifting rankings position with Brazilian David Coimbra … the highest rank a Guyanese ever achieved.”

The fitness enthusiast is also a bodybuilder. Last July he won the bodybuilding heavyweight class at Seniors Bodybuilding Championship which was held at Park Rayne. He also competed in the Guyana Strong Man event last November and finished as runner-up to Julio Sinclair.
