Mabaruma man charged with stealing $1.8M worth of phones

A 21-year-old resident of Mabaruma, yesterday, (February 26, 2019) appeared before Chief Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court.

It was alleged that Renee De Freitas, between February 20, 2019 and February 21, 2019, at the Kamaka Water Front, in the North West District, broke and entered the store of Andre Gamel, where he stole a quantity of phones.

Among the stolen items were a plum cellphone worth $20,000, a nokia worth $19,000, six Samsung phone cases valuing $9000, one plum tablet worth $24,000 and 23 Samsung phones worth $1,127,000. The items valued a total of $1,875,000.

The defendant denied the charge when it was read to him.
Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield did not object to bail under the condition that the defendant reports to the Mabaruma Police Station every Friday until the matter is concluded.

De Freitas was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 and will return to the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court on May, 20, 2019.
