Reigning champs Show Stoppers book final spot
THREE-time and reigning champions, Show Stoppers, booked their spot in the final of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ West Demerara Zone to maximise their chances of retaining the title.
When the semi-finals of that zone kicked off on Friday night at the Pouderoyen tarmac, West Bank Demerara, Show Stoppers eased past Up-Top Bosses, 2-0 courtesy of a ‘Guinness Goal’ (counts as 2 in the closing minutes) from Trayon Bobb in the penultimate minute of the game.
Meanwhile, in the first semi-final of the night, Brothers United faced Ballers Empire and that matchup went down to the wire after regulation and extra-time failed to produce a winner with the score deadlocked at 2-2.
It was all action as both teams scored late ‘Guinness Goals’ to send the crowd into frenzy. First Andrew Murray Jr found the back of the net in the 37th minute only for Ballers’ Quincy Dos Santos to strike back the very next minute, after extra time did not produce a winner.
It was down to penalty kicks and Brothers United held their nerve to prevail 2-1 from the spot.
In the ‘Plate’ semi-finals, Jetty conceded an own goal to the delight of West Side Ballers who booked their final berth while ESPN beat Bagotstown 2-0 on penalty kicks after a 0-0 stalemate in regulation time.
Next Friday (February 15) the final will pit Show Stoppers against Brothers United with $500 000 at stake and qualification for the National Playoffs, while in the Plate section, ESPN clash with West Side Ballers for $60 000.
The third-place will see Up-Top Bosses take on Ballers Empire. All matches will be played at the Pouderoyen tarmac, West Bank Demerara.
