PRINCIPAL Magistrate Faith McGusty on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, imposed a one-year suspended sentence, along with a fine of $15,000, on a 25-year-old welder for gun possession.

Khayyam Ahmad of South Road Bourda, Georgetown, made his second court appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and changed his plea to guilty, after spending over a month on remand for the indictment.
Ahmad admitted that, on December 1, 2018, at South Road, he had a .32 pistol in his possession without being a licensed firearm holder.

Representing the father of four was attorney-at-law, George Thomas, who begged the court for a non-custodial sentence to be imposed on his client.
Police Prosecutor Ceon Blackman explained that on the night in question, Police Constable Williams went to the vulcanizing shop where Ahmad worked and the men got into a heated argument.

Ahmad left and came back with the firearm at his waist and continued his argument with Williams until a customer told him (Ahmad) “Boy, you ain’t know is a police yuh talking to.”

Blackman explained that Ahmad, after hearing that the man was a police, ran to the back of the shop and disposed of the firearm. The police were summoned and the firearm was retrieved.

The magistrate, after considering that Ahmad had thrown himself at the mercy of the court, imposed a one-year suspended sentence. He was also fined $15,000.
