POLICE in the West Demerara division are investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged dumping of a new born baby boy in a pit latrine at Goed Fortune, West Bank Demerara on Wednesday afternoon.
The Guyana Chronicle was told that the mother of child gave birth after she began experiencing labour pains at her Lot 57 Goed Fortune home. According to relatives and neighbours, when the young mother gave birth to the child, she severed the umbilical cord and placed the baby into a ‘teny’, passed her five-year-old daughter through the house window and then gave the child the ‘teny’ with the baby to discard in the pit latrine which is located behind the house.
One woman said that she was asleep when she got a call from neighbours to view a baby in the latrine. The woman said that she immediately told them to take the baby out of the pit and they rushed him to the hospital. The baby was reportedly still alive at the time the discovery was made. Guyana Chronicle was told that the baby was discovered in the pit by a relative who had gone to use the outhouse.
