A 28-year-old man was on Wednesday remanded to prison after being charged with the capital offence of murder.

Gavindra Sewpersaud of Number 70 Village appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court where he was charged for the murder of Navindradatt Bhawan called “Altaf and Mice”. He was unrepresented. On January 10th, Bhawan was found lying face down by his uncle, Mohamed Sarfraz Noordeen, 42, on the Number 70 Village, Middle Walk.

At the time of the discovery, the young man was still alive and frothing from his mouth while panting for breath. He was rushed to the Skeldon Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. A post-mortem was conducted, however, the result was inconclusive pending a toxicology report.

Relatives believe that Sewpersaud acted on the threats he issued on the day in question when he went to the home of Bhawan after he (Bhawan) failed to return the $5000 given to purchase alcohol. The matter was transferred to the Springlands Magistrate’s Court. Sewpersaud will return to court on February 21, 2019.
