CHIEF of STAFF of the Guyana Defence Force Brigadier Patrick West told troops at Base Camp Ayanganna on Thursday that he is satisfied with the state of the force at the end of 2018 and urged them to continue to be good stewards and representatives of the uniform they wear.

“We have had a good year,” Brigadier West said. He said he believed that the force performed fairly well in all of its operations and in the area of training, at least 70% of ranks received training through a number of courses. Additionally, he noted that administratively, in the areas of quartering and logistics, there has been considerable progress.

“Our financial records are also in good standing as we have cleared all major liabilities and so we are going into 2019 with no known liabilities,” Brigadier West asserted to loud applause. Over 500 soldiers received incentives for outstanding performances and Brigadier West made it clear that success will always be rewarded in the GDF. “I appreciate your efforts as ambassadors of this force and we look forward to your continued commitment. Do not become complacent or lethargic in your work,” he urged.

Cultural performances by the soldiers were also part of the activity. Brigadier West also used the observance of Soldiers Day to promote Caribbean Boxing Championships gold medallist Desmond Amsterdam to the rank of substantive corporal for his outstanding performances during the competition.

Camp Ayanganna is home to Defence Headquarters and the Office of the Chief of Staff and is traditionally the final base for Christmas lunch each year. Soldiers Day activities at Base Camp Ayanganna closed off traditional Christmas celebrations for soldiers. Despite all activities over the last two weeks, security at all bases and locations will not be compromised as troops, including officers, will maintain essential security duties throughout the holiday season. In addition, GDF troops will be involved with the rest of the Joint Services in the conduct of patrols around the country.
