A PASTOR is in critical condition at the New Amsterdam Hospital after he sustained several fractures in the right leg when a drunken driver collided with his motorcycle at the Canje intersection on Sunday evening.
The driver reportedly sped away from the scene.
Pastor Cecil Agard, 76, of Nurseville, New Amsterdam, had moments earlier left the home of a Sheet Anchor, East Canje family who was in need of spiritual guidance and intervention. At around 20:00hrs, as he was heading west along the roadway, motor car PPP 2518, in an apparent bid to overtake him, collided with the pensioner’s motorbike.

An eyewitness said that the driver immediately turned off his car lights and sped away from the scene, leaving the injured man lying on the roadway.
However, public-spirited citizens took the senior pastor of Faith Deliverance Tabernacle to a nearby health institution where he was admitted. Relatives said he underwent an emergency surgery and they were told that he sustained four fractures to the right lower limb.
Meanwhile, as word spread about the accident, family and church members launched a search for the suspect who was later found hanging out at the Intersection Bar at Winkle Road, New Amsterdam.
After a heated exchange, the police were summoned and following a search of the motor vehicle PPP2518 he was allegedly driving, a large bottle of whisky, a cutlass and several grams of cannabis sativa were found.
The suspect, a 51-year-old, retired seaman, has since denied involvement in the accident. Nevertheless, he remains in police custody as investigations continue.
