REKIE Williams (District 11) and Sheama Tyrell (District 10) won the male and female ‘Nationals’ Open 10K Road Race yesterday.
The race, which marked the opening of the 58th National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships, started at Mary village and concluded at the finish line inside the National Track and Field Centre.

The 18-year-old Williams, who also won last year’s 10K, ran 34 minutes and 55 seconds (34:55) to take gold. Originally from Region One but attends Chase’s Academy on scholarship, Williams was ahead of Darrel Davis (District Six) and Marvin Hamilton of District Five.
Meanwhile, Tyrell erased Rupununi’s Margaret Agusto’s winning time last year, (42:57) and replaced it with her own time of 42:07 which saw her crossing the line before any other female athlete.
Marcia Andrews of District Nine ran 46:29s to take second place and District One’s Lea Harris (48:18) was third.
Today, the swimmers will be in action at the national Aquatic Centre from 09:00hrs, while at the same time at Leonora, more track and field action is scheduled.
