A SMALL fire at the D Singh and Sons store on Regent and King Streets, Georgetown, on Friday, has left owner Anand Singh counting his losses.

The fire of unknown origin started in the store, but was contained by firefighters who acted swiftly after being alerted by the store owner.
“I was in front when one of the employees came and say look a fire start at the back,” said Singh, adding that most of the damage was not caused by the fire, but by the force of the water the firefighters used to extinguish the flames.

The firefighters assisted him with mopping up and ensured that the place was dry before they left.
He believes that the fire was caused by electrical problems. The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has launched an investigation to ascertain the actual cause.

“I am glad that the fire didn’t spread further, because more would have been lost, since it wasn’t only my store that occupied the building, there are a few more,” Singh said.
The proprietor has been operating his business on King Street for years and has never encountered a fire.
