POLICE apprehended an unemployed resident of Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara, who robbed an off-duty police constable on Phagwah Day.
Police Press Officer, Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan said the suspect is being processed for court on a charge of robbery.
He said investigations revealed that the 23-year-old peace officer was walking along Hincks Street, Georgetown, about 09:15hrs on Friday when the suspect, armed with a pair of shears, pounced on him.
The cop was relieved of a cellphone and G$240.
Ramlakhan said the quick-thinking policeman did not try to engage the robber but instead, made a thorough observation of him and promptly informed his supervisors.
A short while later, a team including a cadet officer, went to the Stabroek Market area and arrested the suspect under the big ‘Clock’.
He was found in possession of the policeman’s property as well as the instrument used in the commission of the crime.
