… Increased focus on safety; more partnerships touted
THE 2018-2019 executive of the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) will increase focus on safety and more partnerships to ensure the sport flourishes.
This is according to president Rameez Mohamed who began his second term last evening following his election at the body’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Thomas Lands.
“We have been taking a lot of flak for an incident that occurred on Sunday. I’m sure you all know the issue I’m speaking about but we as a committee are using it as an eye-opener for even more track safety for future events.”

“I’ll continue to say that if there had been zero safety measures then the situation would have been worse. The marshals and others must be praised for that. But at the same time, better can always be done.”
He noted that there are big plans in the pipeline for 2018-19, including a regional drag championship which they are looking to pull off midyear as well as several crucial upgrades to the South Dakota Circuit.
“In the interest of development, both of the sport and the facilities, we are looking at securing some more long-term partners. There are a few that we can now resume talks with (after the AGM) and look at possibilities.”
Quizzed about the much-anticipated launch pad for drag racing at the South Dakota Circuit, the GMR&SC boss contended, “It is for that reason, among others, that we are looking at new partnerships to complement the existing ones we have. A new strip will cost us in the region of $16M and that’s not something we can just do.”
Mohamed will have Hansraj Singh as the vice-president once more with Azim Jaffar as secretary, Nirmal Sukhram as treasurer and the assistant secretary/assistant treasurer is Azaad Hassan.
The club captain remains Sunil Singh with Joel Evans as technical adviser.
The committee members are Paul Jiwanram, Motilall Deodass, Haniff Mohamed, John Bennett and Kamal Seebarran.
