A FORMER member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) was on Friday charged and remanded to prison on a carjacking charge.
Twenty-six- year old, Jason Harry, of Kuru Kuru, Linden Highway, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’Court.
It is alleged that on May 26, 2015 at Durban Backlands, armed with a gun in the company of others, Harry robbed Phillip King of one Toyota Primo motor car worth $3.2M, one Samsung Galaxy phone worth $67,000, a pair of American Eagle slippers worth $4,000 and a bottle of cologne worth $8,000.
Harry’s attorney Melvin Duke, in seeking bail stated that based on facts, no weapons or items were found on his client and as a result the “Police can’t prove anything”.
Prosecutor Richard Harris, however, objected to bail being granted to the defendant, citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts. He further noted that the defendant was positively identified and parts of the stolen car were recovered at his home.
The prosecutor said that the defendant is also being investigated for simple larceny and fraud, which he did not commit alone but in the company of others.
The prosecutor also stated that if Harry were granted bail he would make contact with other persons and this would interfere with the investigations.
Bail was refused and Harry was remanded to prison until the March 23.
