–mere hours after getting married
CANADA-based Rozan Ally, 52, was found hanging from a mango tree aback his brother’s home here, hours after getting married.
Ally, better known as “Yasim” and formerly of East Canefield, East Canje, Berbice returned home two Fridays ago to cement a relationship begun Online with Subitrie Heeralall, called “Sobi”, of Triumph Village, East Coast Demerara.
Nine days later, the body work machinist got married according to traditional Muslim rites in Berbice, and was expected to travel to Georgetown later this week to uplift his marriage licence, in an effort to legalise the union.
But on Monday morning, he left home around 06:30hrs, after kissing his new bride goodbye.
About two hours later, as his older sibling, Wajidali Wazir, was about to leave home, he saw a large gathering across the street ahead. As he drew near, he saw that his brother had used a lime green sheet to hang himself with. Police say a suicide note was found in the man’s pocket.
At first, relatives were tight-lipped about what may have led Yasim to take his life, but Wajidali broke the ice, saying that his brother’s death has left them many unanswered questions.
“He showed no sign of depression; he got married yesterday. He should have been happy…” he trailed off, while other mourners shook their heads as much in wonderment as in sorrow.
One female relative, unable to contain her grief, blurted out: “The cake now being iced for the reception. I want to know what prompted this,” referring to the sudden demise of her uncle.
Ally, who was previously married, has just one child; a daughter. The body is currently at the Arokium Funeral Home in New Amsterdam, awaiting post mortem.
